Like with so many incontinence products, the choice of incontinence bed pads can be overwhelming. They are available in different designs; some can be used on top of the mattress cover and others underneath; some have tuck in flaps and others don’t; some you can wash, others you just throw away. So how do you choose the right incontinence bed pad?
First, let’s answer the question:
Why might you want incontinence bed pads?
They are a great product for peace of mind. You might already be using incontinence pants or pads, but for ensuring your bed stays completely dry, and you get a better night’s sleep, the addition of a bed pad is a really good idea.
A good quality incontinence bed pad is particularly useful on children’s beds, or if you are recovering from surgery or childbirth, or even if you are only have episodic bladder incontinence. And many of our customers like to use them if they are staying away from home, at perhaps a relative’s house or in a hotel, for added security. Some people have even found they are useful as a changing mat for baby, or in the bedding of a new puppy!
Which are better – washable bed pads or disposable bed pads?
We think that washable incontinence bed pads are an effective, environmentally friendly and cost-saving alternative for long-term use. Washable bed pads are usually heavier and so less prone to moving during the night, meaning many people find them much more comfortable. Washable bed pads also often have higher absorbency, so adding to peace of mind. Washable pads may seem expensive initially, but in the long-term, they are nearly always going to be the cost-friendly option, but bear in mind you’ll usually need at least two to switch them over and keep your mattress clean.
However the performance and convenience of disposable incontinence bed pads cannot be overlooked – these products are great if, for example, you are a caregiver and you don’t have the time to spend washing and drying bed pads. They are ideal for taking away with you when travelling, and you’re not going to have access to a washing machine. Some people consider them a more hygienic option. But if you opt for disposable pads, you’ll need to make sure you keep up with your ordering. Many companies, including Arelle, will offer discounts if you set up a recurring order, which can help you save money.
What other things should I consider when buying an incontinence bed pad?
The first thing is to consider the material of the bed pad, is it soft and comfortable? Is it noiseless or does it rustle – you don’t want it disturbing your sleep! When tested, does it absorb quickly? Is there any leakage? With disposable products, we let you have a free tester so you can try it for yourself.
Then, how does it stay in place on your bed? The bed pad needs to grip the sheet so it stays flat and does its job. Some bed pads feature tuck-in flaps to position the pad securely. Alternatively, there are bed pads available without flaps for users wanting to protect only one side of the bed.
What size do you need? There should be options for part bed coverage and fuller coverage, in singles and double sizes.
