You’ve probably heard us say many times before that choosing washable incontinence pants over disposables is the best decision you can make for the environment AND it will save you money. Plus, you might even surprise yourself by how comfortable and easier they are to use than fiddly disposables!
But how do you choose which washable incontinence pants to buy? Here are our top tips to help you decide:
What is your level of incontinence?
Let’s get right to it – washable incontinence pants are best suited to you if your flow is light to moderate. We find that they are most popular among (and suited to) customers with stress incontinence, those times when you might leak when your bladder is under pressure; for example, when you cough, sneeze , laugh or exercise. So if your incontinence is severe, you might discover that washables are not for you.
Arelle’s pants are made in the UK using fine polycotton and Lycra, with high quality elastic and trimmings. The last thing you want is your pants falling apart after a few washes! We make sure that the gusset of the pants is an absorbent layer of a built-in pad with a waterproof lining. And we offer different designs for men and women – in sizes from XS all the way up to XXXL.
How much will the incontinence pants absorb?
For our women’s washable pants, we offer one option with a built-in pad absorbing 120ml (we call this a mini pad) and another with a pad absorbing 250ml (a midi pad). We offer just one mens’ option – a design which can absorb up to 250ml.
What are the washing instructions for the pants?
The pants we stock are designed to be machine washed – but you can hand wash them if you prefer. Depending on how regularly you use your washing machine, you will need a stock of pants to ensure you don’t run out. This can make it feel more expensive initially, but of course you save money in the long run. We offer significant price savings when you buy pants in packs, as opposed to single items.
How long should the washable incontinence pants last?
Ideally, as long as possible! We have tested our products to ensure they last for around 100 washes. Think how many disposable products you could have used and thrown away in this time!
What else is there to consider?
Well, washable pants are generally more discreet than their disposable counterparts, so this might be important to you if you are very active, or if you wear close fitting clothing. And of course, any washable product generates minimal waste; they’re not full of plastic and they don’t get sent to landfill.
So if you want to do your bit for the planet, then washable pants are a much better option. But it might be that at times you choose a mix and match approach, perhaps combing the security of pants with a disposable pad. That is a really good compromise in our view!
